A Position Statement

At the center of how we think about AI at St. Norbert College is a simple but important question: does this support Human Flourishing? That means asking whether the ways we’re using AI, in our courses or in our personal lives, are helping us think critically, communicate effectively, and solve problems creatively, or getting in the way of those things.
For faculty, this framework invites a shift in how we think about assessment: less focus on the final product, more focus on the learning journey. Instructors get to decide how much or how little AI belongs in their courses, based on what makes sense pedagogically for their students – and sharing the reasoning behind those choices matters! When faculty explain the “why,” students are better positioned to understand and respect those decisions.
And that’s really what this comes down to: mutual trust. Students trusting that faculty have their best interests at heart. Faculty trusting that students are honoring the spirit of those expectations. When we keep human flourishing at the center of that relationship, we’re living out the Norbertine values of mutual esteem, trust, and responsibility to one another.
